The fig is the fruit of the fig tree, which bears fruit once a year. It is one of the first fruits cultivated by man: traces of fig plantations dating from around 9000 BC have been found. Figs have a thin, leathery skin.
The fig originates from India and the Mediterranean. These days figs are grown all over the world. Our figs come mainly from Brazil and Turkey.
Fresh, ripe figs have a very sweet, aromatic flavour. The combination of the soft, meaty flesh and the crunchy seeds is delightful.
You can eat fresh figs whole, skin and all. Figs are also ideal for use in both sweet and savoury dishes.
Figs should be kept in the refrigerator, where they will keep for a few days. Remember: the fresher the figs are, the tastier they will be.
Sweet figs combine well with a gutsy counterpart. They taste wonderful with raw ham and a drop of balsamic vinegar, or try them with some goat’s cheese or Gorgonzola.
