The passion fruit is a sweet, exotic fruit with a delicious, slightly tart flavour. The fruit is round and has a hard skin. It contains yellow pulp with black, edible seeds.
The passion fruit originates from Brazil but now grows in all countries with a tropical climate in Africa, Asia and South America. Our passion fruits come mainly from Columbia, as well as South Africa, Vietnam, Kenya and Zimbabwe.
The yellow, jelly-like pulp of the passion fruit has a fresh, sweet yet slightly tart taste.
The pulp of the passion fruit has a wonderfully tropical flavour and is mainly used in juices and desserts. It is also delicious stirred through yoghurt or eaten straight from the skin.
Allow the passion fruit to ripen at room temperature. Once it is ripe it can be stored in the refrigerator. When the fruit has a wrinkled skin, it is perfectly ripe and tastes sweeter. The pulp will then be dark orange in colour.
To extract the juice (without the seeds), rub the pulp through a sieve or press the two halves in a citrus press.
