Asparagus spears are the young shoots of the asparagus plant. Green asparagus gets its bright green colour because it grows above ground and has therefore seen the sun.
Green asparagus originates from Egypt. Our asparagus comes mainly from Mexico, Peru, Poland and Spain.
Green asparagus has a savoury, aromatic flavour.
Green asparagus does not need peeling, but it should be washed before use. Always cut off the white, woody end. You can prepare green asparagus in several different ways. It can be boiled, steamed, grilled, stir fried, and so on. Green asparagus combines very well with other vegetables, for example in an oven bake.
Remove the elastic band (if present) and store the asparagus in a plastic bag in the vegetable compartment of the refrigerator.
Grilling or steaming green asparagus is the best way to preserve its flavour and nutrients. Did you know that green asparagus is also delicious barbecued?
